I connected them through the headphone jack but no sound comes through. The a530 has built in speakers that work fine, but they sound terrible for music. When I connect the external speaks, there's no software that opens up to configure anything, and there's no software that gives me that functionality which is currently loaded on the machine.
How to get my old desktop external speakers to work with my new Lenovo a530 all-in-one?
I have never had that occur with my desktop speakers: they work OK with my laptop while being connected to the headphone port.
First, does your headphone jack work for headphones?
If so, are your desktop speakers (1) plugged into the AC power source on your wall? (2) Turned on? (3) Turned to a high volume setting? Also, do the old speakers still work on your old computer?
If all of these items are OK, contact the outfit that sold you your new laptop - or the laptop manufacturer. You may need to load a driver.
One other thing to do is contact the speaker manufacturer.
For these speakers to work, they are going to need a source of electricity. For external speakers, this usually comes in the form of a USB cable or batteries.
-check that All cables that you have regarding the speakers are plugged in
-replace the batteries in the speakers (if they require batteries)
