Why is my computer not making much sound?

I can't understand why, but my Windows 8 Lenovo Thinkcentre won't making any noise. It won't play any youtube videos, and when I play games on Steam, there's very little, almost completely silent sound. My speakers are part of my monitor, so I tried adjusting monitor audio settings to max volume, but it didn't help. I maxed the Windows speaker volume and game volume, but nothing worked. I checked all sound drivers, but all were working properly without need of update. I have no idea what's causing the problem. Can anyone give advice, answers, or a diagnosis? Thanks.

Added (1). It will load youtube videos, but the video won't acutally play back. I can't tell if that's a separate issue, like with Adobe Flash Player.

Contact your Internet Provider, your connection may be too slow.

There can be a lot of reasons. Do one thing connect an external speaker or an earplug to the sound output, if the sound output is still low, then it might be a software issue, if not then your speakers might be damaged ( 50% chance).

Could be a fault on the monitor speakers or a bad lead. Try plugging a pair of earphones into the laptop.
