Can I fix my laptop myself?

My laptop screen and status lights don't turn on when my computer boots. I know my Hard drive and whatnot works fine because I plugged into my TV monitor to post this. I have a refurbished Lenovo Thinkpad R400. The screen and the status lights along the top of the keyboard (you know the ones that tell you if caps is on, if you're plugged in etc.) don't light up at all. Sometimes I can barely read the screen if I shine a light on it.
Please tell me what you think it is and if you think I can fix it myself and if you include directions you get top answer!

Sounds like you lost power to the back lit part of the screen. Yes you can fix it your self, you most likely will have to go under the keyboard to unhook the monitor but before you do that I would press down of the connectors first, and that is more or less of what do you have to lose? For a tear down guide just use google. If your screen is broken make sure the replacement screen is the exact same model number as the one in your computer. Don't repair yourself else you will do something wrong

You have the resources available

Try this, Turn computer off remove battery and hold down Power Button for 30 seconds [releases power buildup] then put battery back and try computer
If still same then try this. Turn off your computer and unplug it. Then turn it back on and make sure you press Fn and F6 keys at the same time as your computer is starting up.

Don't fix it yourself

Some part of the power system is failing. That could explain the status lights and the back light of the panel not coming on. That needs a repair station visit for your laptop.
