Got a new i3, 4gb lenovo. Thinking maybe of investing in giving it 6gb of 8gb. I should note i don't expect to play video games on it. What i use is netflix, vlc, ms word, a chess engine here and there. My question is, can adding ram make me go, "wow, this is a way better computer," or will it be just like, "meh, i guess it's better"?

RAM, standing for "random access memory"'s job with a computer is to handle and give temporary storage for programms and applications in the background, so adding more ram will improve your performance, but only in areas where multitasking may be required. E.g multiple windows open

It depends on whether you are using all of your RAM now. More programs running more RAM used.
Check with Task Manager as to whether you are using all of your RAM.
If not which I would think to be true if you already have 4GB don't bother to upgrade
