I have a Canon Mp190 Printer/Scanner that worked with my old laptop but I can't get the scanner to work with my new one. The driver was out of date and i downloaded the latest one so it's *supposedly* up-to-date and connected but it's still not being recognised as a scanner by my lenovo laptop? I can print with it and I can view it's device properties etc but there isn't an option to open it up as a device and scan anything?

You probably installed the printer drivers, but need to install the all-in-one drivers, which include the photocopying and scanning features.
Try downloading from Canon's web site, make sure to select the proper OS. -> http://www.usa.canon.com/...ndSoftware

Did you try to scan from the printer's menú? I mean from the fisical printer not from the laptop software. I always scan from this menú without problems
