I'm such a noob when it comes to motherboards. So do you know what this heatsink is for? Planning to take it off and see what it is at the same time i apply some thermal compund. By the way its a lenovo motherboard (LGA1155) it get hot once i turn my custom gaming pc on.
What is this heatsink for?

Every electronic component generates some heat if current or elections passes. Some ics and power transistors generates more heat that can't withstand for more time. So heat sink made of aluminum fixed to it to absorb heat. Also one paste called cool paste will fix in between those two.

I think the bios or something like that is below it. I had one of these on an old computer and couldn't ever get the darn thing off to see what's beneath.

I'm guessing it is the motherboard's chipset heat sink.

Might be an onboard graphics controller.
