Borderlands 2 crashes on pc, windows 8?

I have a windows 8 lenovo with intel core i5 and 4 gb of ram. When I try to play borderlands 2 the game crashes every time. I put it on the highest and it crashes within 5 mins. On 1024x768 I got about 15-20 mins but it was smooth. All of a sudden it would turn to a black screen and go back to my windows screen. A pop-up would tell me that my memory is running low. What is the solution for this? How low of a resolution must I go in order to play without interruptions and also are there any other solutions (without spending $$$).
