Downloaded music to my Lenovo think pad e545 edge. When I plug in my iPhone 5 to the computer, it knows it's an iPhone. When I tried to sync the music it didn't say iPhone was connected even though it was. Can I not sync from windows computer to iPhone or am I screwing something up?

You can sync from a Windows computer, you just need iTunes, and the music to be in your iTunes library.

You can use iTunes to sync music to your iPhone 5, but you should know it will erase the songs on your iPhone that are not in the iTunes library. If you want to freely add music to your iPhone without losing data, you can use an iTunes alternative, AnyTrans.
