Sony vaio mouse problem sticking and jumping?

I'm hoping someone can help me please before I throw my new laptop out of the window!

I have just bought a Sony Vaio SFV152 Laptop with windows 8 and it's driving me mad. I love the graphics etc but the mouse is sending me around the bend… I used to have a Lenovo T500 and I'm so missing it but was advised getting a vaio for graphics.

Anyway, moan over and onto the problem… I play Startrek online and use my mouse quite a lot. The thing is everytime I try and use it, it either sticks, jumps or brings the sides of the desktop (which has the clock/search/share/devices bit on it)

Is there a way of having a smooth running mouse? Any help gratefully received! :0)

Added (1). Sorry I mean't touchpad not mouse (although I'm thinking an external mouse might help?)

Use mouse on sheet of white paper
if prob still there mouse at fault… Is it wireless? Needs battery charged
if prob gone change mouse mat

I've got the same problem with a Dell Optiplex running windows 7. Haven't found a solution yet and have tried several different things, no answer online works and nothing in the microsoft data base addresses the issue. It is very frustrating.

Laptops DON't have mice. If you are refering to the touchpad then change the settings for the sensitivity. If you are using a mouse that is pluged into it then the mouse is at fault and not the laptop!
