I have two lenovo laptop computers, that each can receive HDMI cables, the Lenovo Z500 Touch and the Lenovo G580 laptops. If I had a PS4 and connected the HDMI cable into one of the laptops, would the PS4 run and be displayed on the monitor? If so, how could I get it to work? Or would I need an HDTV?

Laptop don't have HDMI IN port. Therefore, it's technically impossible to play PS4 on laptop screen

HDMI ports on laptops are only OUT, never INPUT unless marked like that. Rare to see those laptops. Some All-in-One computers have that.
You can get a video game capture device for USB from Elgato or Hauppauge. Or you could get a video input adapter for USB. But the lag of those and their software converters will make any game play very frustrating.
Better is to use a TV, as the PS4 was designed to do with minimal lag.
