I was womdering what the performance is between the two. I will be getting this laptop anyway but i want to know if i should buy a ps4 for gaming instead of using the laptop. The one I'm getting has an i7, 860m graphics card and 16 gigs of ram, 1tb hard drive with 8 gig ssd hybrid. I love the idea of modding games and i've heard that games play better on PC. Just wondering what the performance of the y50 is.

You can't compare them. The process of coding for a console is very different than for a PC. While the PC may have stronger hardware, it's very inefficiently utilized, and console code optimization is much more extensive (it's easier to code a game when 100% of the users are playing it on identical systems).
In general, a top-of-the line PC will be slightly better, performance-wise, than a newly-released console. However, ten years from now, there will still be new PS4 titles with much of the glitz and glam of PC games, while the PC you bought in 2014 will barely be able to run the current version of Windows without lagging.
Put your money into whatever system plays the games you like, and consider it spent.
