I'm going to college next year, and a lot of people have mentioned how often they use their laptops in class. I have a Lenovo now, and adore it along with the windows system. I never really got along with MACs so I came to the problem of needing a small laptop for notes because I can't carry my heavy and large laptop around. Do you think a chrome book would work well for taking notes in a lecture/ which one would be best? If not what would be a good alternative? I'm really looking for something not very big, and not very expensive.
Is a chromebook worth it?
For college, I think a Chromebook would be an excellent alternative to a more traditional laptop. Granted, you can't use Microsoft products like Word and Excel without some tinkering, but the Google Docs alternative works nearly as well, in most applications. As long as your major isn't in something like computer science where you will need a lot of Windows/Mac software, you should be fine. Chromebooks are lighter, cheaper, and faster that most other budget laptops. And, as terrible as it would be to lose your laptop, losing a $200 Chromebook is much less painful than losing a $1200 laptop.
I would recommend the Acer C720. You can get the 16GB SSD version for $199 on Amazon. It's the model I'm writing this response on. I love the keyboard, the trackpad, the display. It surfs the web perfectly, streams Netflix without stuttering, and is everything I need it to be. While the screen is a little smaller than my old machine (11.9''), you get used to it quickly. Using a product called Crouton, I've got a Linux distribution installed that allows me to use just about any piece of software that the average college student would need.
