I have Lenovo B-50-80 laptop. It has i5 5th Gen (2.2 GHz) processor, 4GB RAM. I will upgrade my RAM to 8GB if replacing hdd with ssd is worth it. My laptop is too slow to even run chrome smoothly. I don't do gaming, but I have to do basic photoshop editing and adobe premiere pro editing or 1080p videos. What should I do?
Is replacing hdd with ssd worth it?
Yes it is, this is not a gaming specific technology so even you can benefit from the speed.
If it's using up the 4 GB of RAM then upgrading to 8 GB would make a big difference.
As for the SSD, it significantly speeds up loading times. Like booting in 15 seconds, or loading a browser in 1 second, fast loading and saving files, etc. Personally I think an SSD is invaluable.
Yea, an SSD would help for sure.
Consider getting a new laptop. The graphics unit in that old one just isn't up to much graphics editing
Yes it is worth it.
When I bought my HP Omen Laptop last year, it came with 1 TB HDD. It took at least 5 full minutes to fully boot up into the desktop due to all of the bloatware BS that HP includes. Also, the turtle speed 5400 RPM HDD wasn't helping at all.
I installed an M.2 250 GB SSD and it boots up into Windows within 15 seconds and slightly faster if I boot into Kali.
You also want to make sure you disable unnecessary startup items. Often times, OEMs include a bunch of "useful" utility programs and monitoring programs. These really kill your startup speed.
You must have a 64 bit operating system to access the full 8GB. However, my pc is not as powerful as yours and it runs fast. You did not mention internet speed but it can limit on line thru-put. I think you may have a ton of programs running in memory that you do not know about. Go to control panel/programs and features and uninstall all unknown non hardware programs. Also, go to task manager and open the startup pull down menu. Disable all programs that
are not hardware driver programs. The programs will still work but not hog up memory. Reboot and grin
Yes you will be surprised to feel the speed.
Absolutely. I rescued an old HP i5 M480 by installing a 250 GB SSD and raising the RAM to 8 GB. It's actually useable now even when I run w10. It really runs great on Linux Mint 18.3.
Yes, it loads things quicker, uses power more efficiently especially on laptops (less stress on the battery). Suggest using Acronis or some preferred disk cloning software to move everything from the old drive to the new ssd, thus not losing your personal data. Buts it recommended to do a fresh install on the ssd.
