Ok so the original hard drive kicked the can, but my issue as of now is that the laptop did not come with a windows cd. The y50 has the handy recovery startup button next to the normal power button that I've used to boot up and do a factory reset a couple times, will that work with a brand new hard drive? There also isn't a disk drive so if I need to buy a windows cd I d also need an external disk drive… Or is buying a HDD with windows pre installed an option?
Replacing hard drive for Lenovo y50?
NO The recovery files were on the hard drive…
Included on your system was "Create recovery drive" on to flash drive to give you removable install media…
With a new hard drive now would be the time you need it to reinstall the operating system!
Also included with all versions of windows is "Create system image" and "create system repair disc"
A system repair disc is bootable and could have also been used to re-image the new drive from a backed up system image…
The Lenovo y50 is pricey kit, it would have been cheap to protect…
Now you will need to order recovery media from Lenovo it would be nice for convince if it came on USB but will probably be on DVD…
You have to call them to order Recovery Disc
