So I'm about to go into my first year of college and I need a new laptop. Going to college I'm on a really tight budget and my max is $500. I know that with that price I won't be getting a top of the line laptop, but I understand I will get what I pay for. I was looking at the Acer Aspire Switch 10 and the Lenovo yoga 2 11. The thing that hooked me on the acer is the installed Microsoft office and the detachable screen to a tablet. The lenovo however is about an inch and a half wider. Which one is overall better for schoolwork?

Go HP; lower price, usually less issues (compatibility, software), and they aren't good just because of the name like apple. Just get a pavilion or something close in price and hardware, and make sure you have a lot of HDD space…

For school work, you should opt for robust hardware and software rather than layout.
In my opinion, HP ProBook series seems quite good.
