I'm going to buy a new laptop and I'm a computer science major so I'm curious to hear what programmers prefer when it comes to their laptops. I'm a PC guy so no Macs. I'm thinking about something from Dell. Maybe an Inspiron 7000 series. Don't know if I can afford an XPS. $799 is really my top price tag. Can you guys recommend me anything? I prefer at least 4GB of RAM, a 4th Gen Intel i5 processor. I'm guessing 500GB hard drive would suffice unless someone can tell me otherwise.

I think Lenovo ThinkPad W540 suits you best.although it doesn't look great, it is mind-blowing, I don't recommend Dell (I'm a Dell user)

Surface pro 3 has an intel i3 core, 64gb SSD in a tablet that is 800g and 9.1mm thin for $799.
i'm not sure if it would completely fulfill your needs though.
I'm buying the i5 256gb model of the surface pro 3 for $1299 + $129 for the keyboard, which is probably the best tablet you can get, but you should probably look in to a laptop.
MAKE SURE FOR GOD SAKE YOU GET AN SSD! I didn't and my laptop is so sluggish.
