Lenovo lap top. Volume is set to max. Now. But still very low. Is there a way to increase volume?

Headphones are usually used with a laptop. However, you can connect external speakers. The speakers in a laptop are of course, small and not intended to be a full stereo system. Also, make sure your playback options (right click the speaker icon) are set to the correct audio device and shown working and as the default playback device. Look in device manager to see if the audio device has been detected and installed and has good drivers loaded.
