Can I find a lost phone through GPS?

I need to find the phone but I can't seem to do it.It's an android phone (lenovo a806) and it is connected to my gmail accout. However when I try to locate it through google it says it is unavailable. Does it need to be connected to the internet? If yes is there another way to locate it?
