Best computers for college students?

I would get a mac and add there external CD drive

Why would you want old outdated technology like a CD Drive.

If you have your heart set on a Mac and you need a CD drive, then the MacBook Pro (NOT with retina display) is really the only way to go. At the moment, they are only offering the 13" version, and are in the process of phasing it out entirely in favour of the thinner and lighter models with no CD drives, and SSD instead of a harddrive.
In most cases, an external CD drive is sufficient for occasionally using CDs, but if you are in a particular situation of often using CDs, then you will probably want to look at other manufacturers. For example, Lenovo and Toshiba offer several excellent laptops that give you more "bang for you buck" than a Mac, come with an internal CD drive, and are availability with several different screen sizes, processors and storage capacities.

With Mac you pay a huge premium for the brand name… It's like buying designer jeans. Windows-based laptops can perform just as well or better at half the price.
