The Lenovo u430 is availible for 500$ refurbished and seems like a great laptop. However, I don't know if i should wait until late July and see if there's anything else that is a better deal for a college laptop.
Should I buy the lenovo u430 from best buy for 500$ or wait until closer to college and look for another one?

You should go with Lenovo ideapad z series. Actually I have Lenovo ideapad z570 model laptop from last 3 years. This is very cheap and much faster in compare then others, specially for gaming.

I've heard nothing but great things about Lenovo products but haven't had one myself. The one thing to keep in mind is that you're going to be using that computer A LOT and will have very important documents stored on it. The computer should probably be fine but if you do store a decent amount of important documents, I'd also recommend maybe an external hard drive or something where you can back up your materials.
