Computer can no longer read USB. Very annoyed?

I don't know too much about computers, so please speak in elementary terms to me. I think my Windows Lenovo laptop… I think it's a Lenovo G550, at least, that's what it said on a sticker on the bottom of the computer, anyway, I received a new Fujifilm S4850 (which I'm more familiar with than a computer) that I got for my birthday in October of last year. So I've had it 7 months. I have lots of pictures on it, a ton of which I've downloaded onto the computer with the cable the camera came with. I've had success with it for all 7 months, until yesterday. I tried to connect it to all 3 USB ports on the computer several times for several minutes each. Nothing. I even took out the battery from the laptop for 5 minutes. No change. Restarted the computer numerous times and got nowhere. So today, I got a USB card reader for the camera card. I plugged it into all 3 ports on the laptop and, yes I made sure the reader was compatible with a SDHC card (yes, it is). The same reaction. The computer can't read it. At this point I have been patient with it, but as you can see, I don't have lots of patience with technology. I'm angry with it now.

A side note that might be beneficial: when I click on that Windows icon at the bottom left corner, where it says "Shut down" there's a shield with an exclamation mark icon. It tells me to update, but it will configure many times, failing each time. Does that have anything to do with it?

Try first another USB card with data on it. If computer opens it then you can say that there's nothing wrong with computer and the problem is in first USB card. You could drop it or remove (not eject) while computer was something doing. Both those things can fatally damage USB card.

These laptops came with XP, Vista & Windows 7.

Quick note:
The BIOS has a function to enable /disables the USB ports that although rare has set to "Disable"
Check to be sure.

ALSO:
If this is an XP system this may explain it because the support for XP ended

READ…
The shield near the start menu with the exclamation mark is from the Windows updates program
It's there because the updates did not finish
Your computer was in the middle of updates and somehow during the updates, the updates were interrupted. ( for what reason is another question).

But It is very possible that the updates that were being done at that time involved hardware driver updates and the USB drivers are gone or corrupt.

This is what I suggest.
If the BIOS is set to enable, and still have the problem then do this…

Either you do a Windows system restore and set it back a week or more to a date "YOU KNOW" it was working,
OR
You go to Lenova.com & download the drivers & re-install them

SEE ON THE BOTTOM

NOTE:
For Windows system restore, you must plug in the laptop during this to prevent any possible power interruption.
ALSO…
You MUST let it finish COMPLETELY without interruption from you.

The usb drivers are damaged that happen sometimes driver are the program that make the usb ports work also Wi-Fi and cd drive need a driver but its not the same that happen when you delete files and you don't know what they are jeje

Hire someone who has patience and understanding of technology. They might be able to find the problem.

Without being there at the computer with you, it's very hard to diagnose the problem. But I suspect that the computer's USB ports broke somehow.

Can you connect any other device to the computer through its USB ports? Have you tried plugging the camera or the card reader to another computer?
