Is it alright to use a laptop without a battery for half a year or longer?

I have been using a Lenovo IdeaPad P580 for nearly three years without significant problems, but the battery has recently died, as in it doesn't charge at all. It has been dying for the past year, and barely lasted 5 minutes from full charge one time.

I hope to continue using my laptop for at least half a year longer as there doesn't seem to be anything else wrong.

Would it be alright to use it for that long plugged in without battery the whole time?
Would it damage the laptop in any way?
Or should I spend $40-50 dollars on a replacement battery that may be used?

Found this on the Lenovo forum, you can run it without battery if you like, however if you have the 65 watt adapter, then your system performance will be affected. If you have the 90 watt adapter then that is okay.

However, without battery, you may lose all your work when the power cuts out due to:
1. Accidental unplugging of the power plug.
2. Brownouts (which momentarily fluctuations in power supplied through main.
3. Or total blackout.

You can prolong the battery life by avoiding frequent top up recharging, i.e. When your laptop charging the battery when it is at 90%. The best way to preserve the battery life, is to use the Power Manager battery management, and set the battery to charge from 75% to 95%, etc.

There's information about it here as well.

I have the same problem with my computer and keeping it plugged in won't damage it at all. You can even keep it plugged in for as long as you want and it still won't get damaged. If you really want your laptop to hold charge for a longer amount of time I would consider buying a new battery. Hoped this helped.
