Lenovo ideapad y510p overheating problem?

I bought a lenovo laptop (ideapad y510p) about 1 month ago. It works great in all ways exept that it keeps overheating and crashing (bsod). When i bought the computer the salesman said that it had an external computerfan on the rightside (looks identical to the left one) that could be switched out at anytime to a dvd player or anything like that. But the right computer fan dosen't seem to work and never has and i don't know if it's broken when perchased or if it has to be activated or something. Anyways my new laptop now crashes a few times per day just showing me bsod and is burning hot. Does anyone know anything about this problem? Is there a way to cool down my computer or something like that? I'm afraid the computer will get dameged if this problem isn't fixed soon.

Sounds like its overheating. You can buy a cooling pad to help out. They're cheap, about $40… But if the inside is packed with dust a cooling pad won't help much. You'd need to go to a shop and have them open it up to see exactly what the cause it. Please be careful, if it is a dust build-up the heat generated from a computer can cause a fire. I work on computers and I've repaired many that either did, or would have caught fire due to poor ventilation.

Repair work on the computer shouldn't be expensive as more than likely it'll take a screwdriver, a can of air, maybe a new fan assembly, and about an hour. But I would definitely look into a cooling pad. Something like this would be what I'm referring to but probably overkill depending on your usage

- Test the hard drive with SeaTools for DOS.
- Test the RAM with Memtest86+.
- Download CoreTemp to monitor CPU temperature at both idle and b4 crash.
- Stress test the CPU with Prime95 to see at what temperature it crashes.
- Open the bottom cover and see if both fans are spinning. If either fan doesn't spin at all, they might forget to connect the fan.
- If everything checkout fine, there may a gap between the CPU and the heatsink due to improper assembling. However, consider it's only 1 month old, I strongly suggest you push for an exchange and stand you ground. Seek warranty repair only as the last option because they could screw up your computer further.
- Also, ambient temperature has huge impact on laptop cooling. What's your room temperature? Still, it should not crash like this.
