The physical port that the wire connects to is badly damaged and the IT technicians in my college recommended that i disable/ power down the port.

Well, you can remove the card, or you can see if your computer's BIOS supports disabling it, or you can have somebody cut the traces.
If you mean just disable it within the OS right click on your Wi-Fi (the on on your taskbar) tab Open network and Sharing center, than Change adapter settings, the Ethernet would be the local area connection which is almost always the first one.
If you're using a PC, it's done through the Device Manager (via the Control Panel).
