Playing Games on Origins makes my computer shut down?

I wanted to try play games on my old laptop (lenovo t420s) so i decided to download dragon age origins and play it. I tried to play but I would only be like 3 minutes in and then it would just shut down out of nowhere. The same went for trying to play the sims 4, it would just shut down 3 minutes in. Other games though like bejeweled are fine though, and it functions fine otherwise so what could be the issue?

My assumption would be that it is overheating. Running games on a laptop is very CPU intensive and thus generates a lot of heat. Laptops usually have bad heat dissipation and the fact that you have a somewhat old laptop probably means that the vents might be blocked by dust causing it to over heat and shutdown.

Based on the possible configurations of your laptop as you forgot to provide such specs… I have to make the potential assumption is that your laptop is struggling on the video processing, which is causing your processor to compensate with an increase load & potentially causing the system to overheat.

Many computers nowadays have thermal sensors on the processor, motherboard & storage drives so the system can keep tabs on operating temperatures. If a sensor exceeds a certain thermal threshold (like 70 C / ~160 F for the motherboard), the system may cut the power (or shut down) as a safety measure to prevent long-term permanent damage to the system. I can only make the logical assumption that thermal generation to "impending meltdown" when playing these games is around that 3-minute mark.

Bejeweled series, on the other hand, are less demanding games & doesn't place as much strain on your laptop, allowing you to play them without risking overheating. So it might be the limit for your laptop.

As much as you don't want to hear it, you may want to consider getting a better laptop that's better geared for gaming. It's just something to consider as you can't upgrade laptops as much as you like to compared to desktops.

Hope this helps!

Maybe your old laptop fan overheating or full of dust try cleaning it or replacing it i think it dying

Why don't you try playing something else beside origin game if you have another game if you have steam try a game on that if your laptop turns off that mean your laptop is dying is time buy new one or can try asking repair shop how much is repair or replace parts
