Problems with my Lenovo laptop?

I have a Lenovo Ideapad y480 that has recently started to freeze within a few minutes of startup. Within the short time that I can use it I can open the task manager and it indicates that "Disk 1" is running at 100% even when the only thing open is the task manager. The previous owner installed windows 8.1 himself and so I thought maybe he didn't update some drivers correctly so that could be the problem but the laptop freezes before I can attempt to check if that is the case. Could this be a virus instead? How should I proceed with this problem?

Yes this sounds like a virus. I recommend booting in recovery mode and attempting a restore. It won't affect personal files but could at least make it usable enough to run norton. Norton is available through your comcast subscription for free. If you don't have comcast, norton is relatively cheap and I recommend you get it and renew the subscription every year. It will prevent problems like this in the future as well. Once booted up and have norton installed have it run a full system scan. If that doesn't work you can do a factory reset if you have the disc's. If that doesn't work I recommend going to geek squad. There are numerous other ways to deal with the problem but they require some extensive knowledge on computers and hardware.
