I bought a Lenovo laptop with high end Nvidia graphics, an Intel i7 processor, 8 gb ram, WIndows 8.1 64 bit, and it was 1000 dollars. Why can't it run simple games like Minecraft? Did I get ripped off?

Minecraft is probably a single core CPU game and hardly uses a CPU.
The issues with Minecraft are often associated with Windows 8 and its drivers.

It turns out, Battlefield-4 LOVES Windows 8. Many modern games run faster and smoother in Windows 8.
It is not exactly the same, and the only other issue is making sure your laptop gets enough cooling. All high end GPU laptops get hot. Need to keep them on a hard surface and possibly a laptop cooling pad.

Ah this time you included the essentials. And yes i'm afraid you did. Unless its a dedicated gaming laptop don't buy a laptop for games. If you get to pic what's inside it then go for it by all means but if its pre configured, then i'm afraid your getting robbed. Also i'm sorry to say but it sounds like you 1000 dollars in the hole:/
