Will the speed of my laptop increase if I upgrade the following into it

Hi, I have a lenovo laptop with i3 processor 64 bit. Currently it is working on windows 7 OS with 2 gb ram and 500 gb harddrive. I'm planning to upgrade it to windows 8 with 8 gb ram and 1tb harddisk. So will it increase the speed of my laptop? Is it safe to upgrade these things? My use of laptop js generally playing games, making collage projects and using internet. Currently the speed of my laptop is very slow and so many games or other softwares are not run on it. Suggestions are appreciated.
