Windows 7 not detecting second monitor?

I have an Emachines E625 with Windows 7 basic and I have a 15 Lenovo LCD Monitor connected through a VGA port.

The monitor works fine. Both the laptop and the monitor share the same screen once I press Fn+F5 which is to switch monitors

The thing is that I want to activate the multi screen mode but the laptop only detects one monitor instead of two.

any advice?

Added (1). MY laptop doesn't have an HDMI port. Just VGA.

Try getting a HDMI and connect it that way instead

You have to go into Display Properties and uncheck "mirror display" and check "extend desktop" when the second monitor is highlighted.
