Added (1). my desktop is win7 and my laptop is win8, i want to transfer files from my desktop to my laptop

Get software like BTSync. It allows you to share folders between all your devices using the torrent protocol.
It's free software and works like a charm on any windows, android; iOS and more devices. It works inside your home network as well as external locations and it's pretty secure with encryption.

Using your LAN cable requires some basic knowledge of networking and file sharing, so if your tutorials don't work, look for an easier solution and have some patience or ask a friend or local IT guru to help a hand.

In device manager… Look for your network adapter… If you see a red x there that generally means the computer does not detect it because the needed driver has to be installed… If there's no red X or yellow? Then your network adapter is in good shape…

You are using a " cross over " ethernet cable?

You can't connect two computers directly with a LAN cable; you'd need a cross-over cable and enter a specific setup in the LAN properties.

If you have a router at home (the internet box), it should have LAN ports at the back. Usually four of them. Just plug both Laptops into LAN ports and they will see each other.
