It gets seen as a low-end brand, but what makes Dell computers so bad? If you upgraded a basic Dell computer, it can be OK for gaming.
Why are Dell computers so bad?
Well this started back when gateway and Dell were battling it out as the top computers on brands. Gateway started to slip a bit to Dell. The issue with these computers back then some of the parts they made were their own and some of the stuff could not be upgraded. I had Dell computers that I worked on that would only take Dell memory and would not take any other brands. They did this to keep their clients from upgraded to other brands. These integrated parts they made were getting beat by competition that specialized in these parts. This made gamers upset that they could not plug in better aftermarket parts.
Dell slipped into a hole a bit and cut corners on their part that are in their computers. Yes Dell and gateway did try make a comeback to making their products interchangeable but the bad name for gamers sort of stuck. Yes you can now upgrade a Dell to what you want it to be because they changed to give the people what they want. The deal is if you buy one it usually comes with low end parts but yes you can upgrade to what you want now. I'm also not a fan of them because I feel what they did to try keep all their customers in house was not right when you wanted to upgrade to something better and cheaper than what they would offer at the time.
Honestly nothing is wrong with them now as long as you get one that you can put the parts in that you want, but at that point why not buy from a brand that lets you chose the parts you want and order it?
I just got a Lenovo desktop that I bought with most of everything I wanted, I upgraded power supply, memory and video card runs great for gaming now.
I got 16 gig ram, 4gig video card, I-7 processor and 750W power supply. Runs great for gaming.
Dell computers are NOT bad computers. I have a Dell desktop computer that is 9 years old and it works like when it was new. I have a Dell laptop that is 8 years old and it still works fine. It still has the AC/charger/adapter and battery that came with it. Now that is why I don't think Dell computers are bad.
Mine stopped charging and eventually stopped starting in the first place. (It had enough power to start, bought a new battery and charger for it)
Dell are quality computers. I don't think they are bad.
I used to have a Dell and I thought it was decent for a cheap PC. They probably just seem low-end now because everyone has a Mac and they cost at least twice as much.
Dell has really nice cases in my opinion. They generally have each section (hdd bay, rom bay, psu, mobo…) on racks and brackets that are either detachable or movable in some way, making them easy to upgrade and service… They're kinda fun to open up, they remind me of my old transformers toys from way back lol.
So if you know what you're doing with a computer and can do your own upgrading, Dell is a great choice to start with and beef up the guts… I recommend getting the biggest case possible to have room for EATX board and a couple SLI vidcards and you have the makings of a beginner enthusiast gaming rig. I don't believe Dell has any water cooled cases, but would be nice if they did…
Dell's customer service is a bit under par since calling them usually makes you wait for a few hours before talking to a human of the English language…
If you don't want to bother tweaking your own rig, get a nice pre-built Asus ROG machine and you shouldn't be disappointed…
