Charging over non-designated USB C?

On the Lenovo Yoga 730 there are two USB c ports on the side, with one designated for charging. However, if plugged in to the secondary port, the charge light still comes on and it charges. I'm wondering if this is a "feature" that could be useful or if is possibly damaging my device via an unexpected voltage coming through?

No, all USB ports will charge, whether it's designated for charging or not. However, the one specifically designated for charging will work regardless of whether your computer is turned on or not. So you could turn your computer off, and keep a cellphone plugged into special charging port, and your phone will still get charged. If the computer is plugged into the wall outlet, then it will charge through that. If your computer not plugged into the wall, then it will charge via the laptop's battery.
