I have a Lenovo Ideapad y700 15isk that's about four years old. About a year ago, it shut down because I couldn't charge it anymore so it died and I'm just now trying to fix it because I never used it anyway. I thought maybe I needed a new charger so I bought an Insignia AC adapter but someone at Best Buy told me it might not work on my Lenovo. I still tried it and surely enough my laptop still wouldn't turn on/charge. Then I thought maybe I needed a new battery and I read online that I should take it out, plug in the power chord and hold the power button for 15 seconds, but that didn't work either. Should I try ordering the same ac adapter that came with my lenovo, or maybe get a new battery? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
How can I fix my laptop that has been dead for a year?

Try a new adaptor. And a laptop should still run without a battery. So you basically answered your question
Get a new AC adapter for more than lightly that is the problem…
You said that you weren't able to charge it previously? What happened to the original charger, and how do you know that nothing is wrong with the AC jack on the computer itself?
Rather than randomly buy various parts, why not take it to a local repairer, they should be able to tell you whether it is a simple fix such as a broken charge port. If one new adapter didn't work the chances are buying another won't. Also if you removed the battery and it still wouldn't work off the charger then the battery isn't the problem either.
Just to be clear as your question rambles a bit, remove the battery and plug in the original ac adaptor and try and turn the laptop on. Does it work? If not it'll be the ac adaptor probably. If it works with the adaptor without the battery then it needs a new battery. They don't last forever.
At four years old, it would be unsurprising that the battery is dead. My experience with other brands is that the internet available replacement batteries are just as good and a fair bit cheaper than name brand.
the AC adapter you bought -- check that it provides the correct voltage. The adapter's output voltage is likely molded into the 'brick's' case and the required input voltage is on the back of your laptop. You can check the actual output voltage with a multimeter.
