Should i wait to get the lenovo y40/50 laptop? - 1

I'm currently in need of a notebook for college. I want sufficient raw power and portability since i go around campus and spend a lot of time there. I want to be able to plays most game in a slim factor enough for school and playtime. Ces 2014 revealed the lenovo next y series, y40/50 in which it's slim while also have the power that i'm searching for. Should i wait? Or look for alternative option. Its gonna be a hard month or two depending on whether or not they'll announce a release date but manageable. GTA expected us students to bring laptop to class in which i find unnecessary also that why i'm really in need of one. If my vaio keyboard didn't died on me i could of wait to upgrade but life happen… My budgets is between $0-1,150$. The current y series the y510p have my preferred specs but the portability factor turned me down even though it's purty cheap. Just an fyi i'm pretty small guy so yeah that is why i don't want a bulky notebook. I would spend most my time in the library but computer are limited and it's usually crowded there. The reason i choose a gaming notebook because of it's power meaning longer life time usage than most cheap laptop that'll be out of date sooner. Sorry for long post thanks for reading. Any other suggestion would be nice I'm open minded about other product just used lenovo because they have better pricing right now. Have a good day guys.

Like you, I was also very interested in the y40 laptop. This most likely doesn't answer your question, but offers additional information. I recently spoke with a Lenovo representative who told me this laptop will promptly be released the first week in May. This may help you make your decision.

I worked in Procurement Engineering at IBM and then Lenovo for quite a few years.
Generally at product announce and official availability there's only a few thousand units available quickly and they sell out and the wait time on delivery is typically another 4 weeks. It is only if something is much better that it is worth waiting.
The new model seems to add touch screen, but I see that as a fingerprint magnet and pushing a screen in a clamshell design and rarely used. The weight shows 5.7 pounds on the Y50 vs 5.95 pounds on the Y510p. Although a little thinner, the space inside is helpful for airflow and cooling and just as the Dell Alienware is heavy and thick, a little thicker is normally helpful.
There will be several versions:

The Y50 appears to go aluminum, sealed battery instead of removable, no optical drive.
The non-touch screen is a pound lighter and probably the better model to buy.
They added a subwoofer in the bottom.
It looks like the Y50 goes GeForce GTX 860M
The price may be higher, but that is an impressive laptop graphics card

If you need a laptop by the end of April, it is not likely the new Y series will get to you by then.
