First of all, a computer you bring to school shouldn't be the latest/newest/greatest. Laptops that get carried around get hard use, they get bumped and dropped and beat up. Also they get stolen a lot. You're using them at school to take notes, to write papers, maybe for e-mail and web-surfing during breaks, NOT to play the latest games, so an old used one is just fine.
Secondly, laptops don't generally last more than a few. After 2 years, a laptop is old, slow, etc. And you'll want another one.
So if it was me, I think I might get a used, $100-150 laptop on Craigslist and think about getting another one in 2 years. In fact the laptop I have, I've had it for 2 years and I'm already thinking about my next one. It's a Lenovo, and I carry it in my motorcycle saddle bags, so it looks like hell. Still works great though!
The best laptop brands are HP, Lenovo and Dell. HP and Dell are very easy to work on. Lenovo are the best designed, generally, built to last, to take a lot of abuse, but they're not as easy to work on. (I mention that because I occasionally repair/refurbish laptops at my job.)
Lenovo by far they are rock solid and way Better Built than any other computer the only problem is is that the kids don't like the word Lenovo for some reason even though the lenovo was once IBM Motorola but that problem is changing as people discover that Lenovo is one of the best laptops made
I don't like Lenovos. So - HP.
Hp and Lenovo are good brands especially if it's just for school work. Of course just make sure you are taking good care of it and don't leave it plugged in all the time when it's at 100% as that will damage the battery and the battery not hold a charge as long.
